Repairing classic furniture

I love seeing old pieces of furniture that have been restored. Furniture used to be made to be repaired and to keep on being used for generations, unlike modern flat pack furniture which often is made for a single use. This blog has stories from second hand stores, families who've inherited special furniture and even schools who have gone through the process of restoring old furniture. It's got a lot of useful tips on how to care for old furniture and how to find a restoration firm. It's a beautiful thing to see an old piece of furniture restored to it's original state.

3 Restoration Projects that Could Use CNC Machining: A Guide for Hobbyists

CNC machining technology is becoming popular in restorative projects because it can work on any kind of material including wood, clay, stone, wax, and plaster among others. In this technology, digital instructions are sent to a CNC machine from a Computer Aided Design (CAD) or a Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software. The machine then cuts or drills parts through an automated process that is highly accurate and fast. Here are some restoration projects that can use CNC machining process. New CNC hobbyists might find this article useful when implementing such projects.

Works of Art

The wear and tear of time can affect the originality and aesthetics of a piece of artwork. Restoration of works of art has come a long way from manual methods to technologically advanced techniques that breathe new life into an object. A CNC system is used in the restoration of sculptures by analyzing the texture, volume, and size of the object to recreate a computer-generated image. The image is then used to create molds that a sculptor might use to replicate the original artwork. Apart from sculptures, this technology is useful in restoring ornaments and other decorative works of art.

Furniture and Finishes

Restoring your carpentry products such as interior finishing and furniture can be a daunting task if done manually. However, with a state-of-the-art CNC machine, you can produce specific frames and wood components for repairing beds and other types of furniture. The machine can cut through softwood, chipboards, and laminates commonly used in household furniture. Some machines have the ability to mill, float, and sand the surface of your furniture to your preferred texture. Furthermore, for cabinet repair projects, a CNC machine can design and produce cabinet panel components together with joining sections.

Glass Panels

Glass panels have broad applications in a home, for instance, mirrors, shower doors, counter tops, entry doors, and decorative glass. Cutting glass is a simple task that any novice can do with the right-hand tools. However, when you want holes, curves, and other perfect finishes incorporated into the glass, you need a CNC machine. These devices are equipped to deliver all kinds of glass components for use in home renovation projects.  The accuracy and precision of glass-cutting are what makes this technology suitable for glass repair projects. The glass is cut in different shapes, sizes, and thickness, depending on the type of project. Regardless of the material you will be restoring or repairing; safety precaution should be observed all the times when operating a CNC machine.
