Repairing classic furniture

I love seeing old pieces of furniture that have been restored. Furniture used to be made to be repaired and to keep on being used for generations, unlike modern flat pack furniture which often is made for a single use. This blog has stories from second hand stores, families who've inherited special furniture and even schools who have gone through the process of restoring old furniture. It's got a lot of useful tips on how to care for old furniture and how to find a restoration firm. It's a beautiful thing to see an old piece of furniture restored to it's original state.

Tips for Turning a Stainless Steel Tube Into a Curtain Rod

If you like a slight industrial vibe in your home, you may want to integrate some stainless steel tubes into your decorating. In particular, these industrial tubes can be used as curtain rods. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you choose them.

Opt for Cylindrical Tubes

With this type of curtain rod, you need to be able to attach small clips to the rod, and then, you need to use the clips to hold your curtains in place. Generally, the clips are attached to small chains or hooks that fit best over a cylindrical shaped tube. Because of that, you may want to stay away from angular, square shaped tubes.

Remember the Brackets

You will need to invest in brackets to hold up your stainless steel rod. Luckily, you can buy standalone brackets at most hardware stores. You don't necessarily have to buy brackets that come with their own curtain rod.

If you like, you can also make your own brackets. Basically, you need a straight piece of metal. Then, you need to bend one end so that it sits flush against the wall, and you need to curve the protruding bit so that your stainless steel rod nests nicely inside of it.

Look for Caps

You don't have to put caps on your stainless steel tube, but it creates a nicer final effect if you do. Generally, there are two types of caps for stainless steel tubes. There are ventilated caps which feature lots of small holes, or there are solid stainless steel caps. They both come in a range of sizes.

In some cases, you may even be able to find traditional curtain rod finials that work with your stainless steel rod. Measure the diameter of the openings at the ends of your stainless steel tube, and look for finials that match that size.

Choose the Right Size Tube

Finally, you have to ensure that you choose the right size stainless steel rod. Ideally, you want a rod that is thick and sturdy enough to hold your window treatments. If you're just hanging small lightweight curtains—for example, over a kitchen or bathroom window—you can get away with a small tube, but usually, you need one that's a bit thicker.

Then, measure the window. Typically, you want the tube to be a bit longer than the width of the window. The industrial supplier who sells you the stainless steel tubing should also be willing to cut it for you, but sometimes there is an extra fee for that.
