Repairing classic furniture

I love seeing old pieces of furniture that have been restored. Furniture used to be made to be repaired and to keep on being used for generations, unlike modern flat pack furniture which often is made for a single use. This blog has stories from second hand stores, families who've inherited special furniture and even schools who have gone through the process of restoring old furniture. It's got a lot of useful tips on how to care for old furniture and how to find a restoration firm. It's a beautiful thing to see an old piece of furniture restored to it's original state.

Three Things You Should Never Put In Your Garbage Bins

Australians create a lot of waste with over 540kg per person each year disposed of in the many bins available. Depending on what state or territory you are in, you probably have at least three types of bins: one for recycling, one for plants or garden waste and one for the rest of your daily household waste. However, some items do not work for any of these three bins, and disposing of them can take a bit more time than just putting them in the right trash can. Here are three things you should never put into your regular household bins and what to do with them.

Batteries

Yes, that's right, the humble battery is not something you should be simply throwing out into the trash. Batteries, even ones that are empty, are a major fire hazard as they can heat up and combust when packed into landfills. The problem is that they are also not easily recycled, so regular recycling bins are not the proper place for them either. The good news is that several stores and the Australian government have recognised this problem, and there are now places where you can drop off batteries safely. Next time you go shopping, simply search the closest battery drop-off and you will be amazed at how close it is.

Harsh Chemicals

Hazardous waste disposal is not something to be taken lightly, and simply throwing out your varnishes, pesticides and paint strippers will be very detrimental to the environment. There are many hazardous waste disposal businesses that offer pick-ups to take these chemicals off your hands. There may or may not be a small fee, depending on your location and council, but that should be factored in when you buy these chemicals in the first place. Never pour these chemicals down the drain. Before you contact a hazardous waste disposal business, make sure to check their site for what items they take.

Asbestos

You may be surprised to learn that there are many Australians out there who grew up in and around asbestos construction who don't realise just how dangerous the fibre is. If you find a pile of asbestos in your shed that your relative has left sitting around, then immediately call an asbestos removal company. Every year more and more people get diagnosed with problems associated with asbestos, and many of these cases turn out to be chronic and life-threatening. You don't want to potentially expose your local garbageman to this asbestos, so make sure to call people who can deal with it safely.
